So, you’ve decided to build your dream home and are looking for new, innovative, and unique ideas. You not only what this new home to be the best on the block but to have all the cool features and energy-efficient gadgets possible to save you money while impressing the neighbors. There are so many options to think about so check out the list below to enlighten your imagination!

1. Basement

Basements are always outstanding features to have from the extra space and sometimes cheaper square footage they can add when finished. They are also useful to help retain heat and cooling, saving on your energy bills. When building a new basement, I would suggest a deep pour. This extra foot will be a blessing for any tall person but it also adds a more open concept feel allowing your guest and potential home buyers to feel more comfortable.

2. Mudroom

Have you ever been to another’s house that requires you to take your shoes off outside getting your socks dirty and bugs in your shoes? Not pleasant right? Adding an invitational mudroom with a bench to sit down on will allow your guests to sit at ease and comfort when removing their shoes keeping your house clean. These rooms are also great storage for coats and installing a sink that allows you to wash your hands after being in the garden, not spreading dirt into your home.

3. Walk-In Closets

Happy wife happy life, right? Well, one of the top requests I hear from women is a walk-in closet. These closets are excellent for ALL your shoes, coats, and clothes, not requiring you to put all the time and effort in switching out each season for the next. Adding in an additional makeup area and a large mirror will be perfect when getting dressed in the morning.

4. Central Vacuum System

Only seeing one of these in my life I am honestly still impressed by them and surprised I don’t see them more often. This innovation has allowed people to not have to lug around a heavy vacuum, find the nearest plugin, listing to a loud vacuum run while circulating dust and debris into the air, wrap up your cord, and then lug your heavy vacuum back. Sounds painful right? When you could just plug a lightweight hose into the wall, vacuum up your mess, and you’re done! What’s even better is you can have your collection container installed into an easy to empty location like a garage.

5. Smart Devices

Smart devices like thermostats, doorbells, monitors, lighting and more are extremely useful to have. These new systems can all work together to improve the efficiency, like shutting off lights, and security of your home, like showing you who is at the door without answering. Also, if you’re away from home while your children are there and you want to make sure everything is going smoothly, click an app on your phone to view your at-home cameras.

6. Lighting

From the kitchen to the living room and however many bathrooms you decided to put in-between they all need one thing, and that is the lighting. Lighting is something many people look over. Proper accent lighting can help show off key features in your home like decorations. Also, taking many videos of homes it can be hard to video in low-light situations and make homes look beautiful at the same time. Adding in proper skylights or sun tunnels will help boost natural lighting, which boosts moods, and can help with heating/cooling. When lighting is not adequate it is easily noticed, however, when it is abundant it is looked at as having “too many switches”. Finding the correct amount can be hard but too many is always better than to less.

7. Outlets with USB Plug-Ins

Plugins, plugins, plugins. It never seems like there is enough or they are placed in terrible locations throughout the house. When building do not make this the case. The more the merrier as the old saying goes, which is true here. Adding in plugins with USB slots will also be a hugee advantage because not everyone brings a charging block with them and why would you want to get up in the middle of a thrilling movie to get one? Placing these types of chargers near couches, beds, and in common areas will impress guests and make life easier.

Bonus. A Hidden Room

Hidden rooms and escape routes through walls have been seen in many movies. These rooms have been showed to help the hero escape from the bad guys leaving them confused. Adding a hidden style room into your home does not have to be for security reasons but can be fun. Having a hidden room behind a wall, bookcase, or whatever you would like adds a special uniqueness to your home that you do not often see. These rooms could be set up as a movie room, a hidden library, or a speakeasy-style bar. Both kids and adults will enjoy the idea of having one of these in their new home.
